Young Men and College

Folks are starting to notice that enrollment of young men is dropping in college.  For example, this article.

There are a variety of reasons, but I happen to know three young men who dropped out of college this past year.  All graduates of the high school class of 2020.  All three went to the first year, 0-21, and alll stayed home for the fall semester of 21.  Their reasoning is as follows.

1.  Covid sucks.  Covid on a college campus really sucks.  They can take classes online, but do it from home and save the cost of dorms and feeding plans.

2.  Student debt sucks.  Even with a variety of scholarships, they were going in the hole.  They didn't want to get out of college awash in debt.

So, they made other plans.

Young Man 1 is in the Guard, working full time and taking classes online.  He's putting money in the bank.

Young Man 2 is working at a small manufacturing concern.  Starting at the bottom, learning to be a tool-and-die maker.  He's putting money in the bank, trying to figure out what his career will be.

Young Man 3 is doing community college and working part time.  He will figure it out as well, and land on his feet.

These three guys are doing fine.  But, they are not paying for an over-priced college education.

Great-nephew went to the welding school in Tulsa for 9 months. By the time he was finished, he had a job waiting for him and was making what his dad was, at the entry level. So if you have a kid that is looking for something hands-on and good money. Y'all might want to have them look into it.
