The Last Salute: Three Volleys

Why indeed do we give three volleys at military funerals?  I admit I am ignorant on the subect, but I know it has been practice since I began attending military funerals.

The Master Chief trys to shed some light on the subect.

Thanks, Master Chief.

And traditionally with Navy/Marines, three spent cases are folded in the flag.

My Dad was a Navy vet. I have the shell casings from his service in the triangle case with his flag "from a grateful nation."

A good friend services the rifles at his local post. He got the job of inventorying and retrieving rifles and blank ammo at a defunct post and discovered a cache of grenade rounds, so this information is worth mentioning: http://www.nebraskalegion.net/news/ammo_safety_message.pdf
