Out-Migration

People are leaving Louisiana.  A poor business climate, coupled with a Democrat governor and a huge welfare population, and Louisiana is mired in the bad mix of poor roads, bad taxes and mo job prospects.  For many years we have bemoaned the lack of candor from our politicians.

There is an article that ranks the states for out-migration, and they have Louisiana listed as the 12th worst state for out-migration.  The other contenders are Massachusetts, Iowa, North Dakota, Michigan, California, Ohio, Kansas, Connecticut, New York, Illinois, and (drumroll) the state with the largest our-migration problem, New Jersey.

Lots of folks want to blame the hurricanes for the problem of people leaving Louisiana, but I note that both Texas and Florida have the same climate, the same hurricanes, and they're attracting people.  The weather has nothing to do with it.  It is the business climate and the politics, plain and simple.

I was born and raised in Shreveport. When I graduated college from Tech in Ruston in 1978 with a BSEE, I couldn't find a decent job in Louisiana.

I ended up spending nine years in Dallas, TX before I finally landed here in Huntsville, AL. Huntsville is home to the second largest research park in the US, behind Californias Silicon Valley. Add the Army's Redstone Arsenal and NASA's Marshal Space Flight center, and there's nothing remotely comparable to the opportunities for young engineers and scientists there.

For years, my Mother kept asking me why I didn't move back and the answer was always the same: "And do what?". There simply isn't enough work. I continually encounter other members of what I call the "Louisiana Diaspora" and they all say the same thing: "I'd move back in a New York minute, but I can't make a living there".

The same with Kansas - poor job opportunities.

I too was raised in Shreveport. Graduated from Tech in '77. Grad school in New Orleans.
Both my parents were from Louisiana. Love the place and (most) of the people. Food is great. I too had to leave to find good employment. I've been a Texican for 35 years now. Texas is better.

I've considered LA in the past, but couldn't find either a job or property that I liked - had a couple of promising interviews 3 years go, but they didn't pan out.

With the anti-energy policies of Biden and his handlers the Louisiana economy which is greatly dependent on energy can only go from poor to pitiful I'm afraid . Gawd save us from politicians .

Perhaps more problems as many from Louisiana work the petroleum industries and send money home. Here in CO with our current crop of trust fund snot doing their best to kill the industry, those high paying jobs are dying.

Son moved NV to CA to NV (Vegas) in last few years, now to CO next month and totally happy to do so. I left LA in 63 (born Opelousas, raised N.O.) for military, retired 93 but nothing in LA drew me back enough to actually make the move. Wanted to, but... Now in FL and visit LA infrequently. Miss it, however. Just not the same.
