That Pesky Law

Why is it that people don't think that the handicap parking law doesn't apply to them?  That they're entitled to park in that blue-lined spot, if they are "only going to be a minute"?

I am taking it as my mission to disabuse them of the notion.  I bet that I ran a half-dozen people out of that spot today, and tomorrow I'm bringing my ticket book.  I've had a gut full of people parking in that spot.

I've never been a ticket-writer.  I'm simply not fond of traffic citations and will generally give a warning rather than write the ticket.  Luckily, my bosses have always supported me and haven't insisted I write a ticket when a friendly warning will suffice.  All that might change, tomorrow.

Get em Paw, they 'need' to learn there is a REASON for those spaces... and it's NOT for them!

A high school buddy of mine came back from Viet Ham missing his legs above the knees. He carries a basin wrench with which he can very quickly remove the valve stems from the tires of cars illegally parked in the handicap stalls. He gets charged and fined frequently for "Malicious Mischief" but has yet to pay a fine himself. He figures he's about $10k ahead of the game over the years from on the spot donations from people who watch him get the ticket after pulling three valve stems from the tires of cars, pickps and vans which have no business in handicap stalls. Once in a while some idiot will try to get physical with him. Mistake. His upper body strength is epic, makes the HULK look like a seven year old polio patient by comparison.

Please do that. Sometimes stupid has to hurt for the message to get through.

Houston's got a program that trains civilians to be volunteer ticket-writers specifically for targeting people abusing the accessible parking spaces. We get a lot of disabled & retirees that volunteer.

You've never seen a more dedicated bunch of folks. They're bringing in almost 100K a month in citations.

You rock, PawPaw! BTW, in OR, we have a companion law which says judges may not reduce the fine for that offense.
