Not Doomed

 That's good to know.  Humanity is not doomed.

When Al Gore lost the 2000 presidential race, he pivoted to global-cooling global warming climate change.  He made quite a pile of money talking about the inevitable; that the weather will change from day to day.  This morphed into the Green movement and has brought us insult after insult to our intellectual curiosity.

Now it seems that there is a new major report (unlike those old major reports) that tell us the weather is changing from day to day.  According to Greg Gutfeld, there is a caveat buried in the report that puts the lie to everything that Gore, et al has been pushing for decades. That's right.  We are not doomed after all.  The weather will change from day to day, and we'll have to adjust.  Sometimes a jacket, sometimes a raincoat. Other times, just a tee shirt and tenner shoes. You have to adjust your clothing to the weather.  It's a radical thought.

Winter Storm

 It's miserable outside by central Louisiana standards.  Several days of rain have left the ground soggy, mud prevails.  Right now it is misting rain with temps in the high 30s.  We're not under any threat of ice or snow, but it is miserable outside.  I have run my errands and will stay hunkered down for the rest of the day,  trying to keep dry and warm.

Looking north a hundred miles, those folks are under the threat of ice.  Bless their hearts.  I hope everyone stays safe out there.

It's days like this when I believe that God is saying "Take a break."  I intend to do so.

Christmas Weather

 It looks like we are in for a deep chill on Christmas weekend.  Predicted temps will set records.

I mean, seriously, they are predicting 8F for Friday morning, which is causing everyone to be in panic mode.  And,it looks like it is going to hang on over the weekend.

Friday won't get above freezing at all, but at least we will be in double digits.  Saturday and Sunday will begin the thaw, but most folks in central Louisiana are simply not equipped for such cold.  In short, it's going to get interesting.

I hope the weather weenies are wrong, but hope is not a plan, so I'm going to start getting ready right now.

Freeze Warning

 The weather weenies are telling me that we have a freeze warning in effect for Wednesday, Oct 19th.

It's only supposed to get down to 30F, but technically that is freezing.

We'll see, I reckon.  I went and got some propane bottles filled today in case I have to break out the heater for the shop.

Tropical Update

 Belle and I will be busy tomorrow,  getting up a the crack of dawn to travel to Atlanta, TX for a Cowboy Fast Draw event.  So, I thought I'd check NOAA to see what the tropics are doing.  Not much, as it turns out.  Here is the 5-day tropical map.

There are a couple of waves that have come off Africa, but the weather gurus don't give them much of a chance of organizing.  IF you go to the weather sides, we see gloom and doom.  I don't see it, and neither does NOAA.

We'll be in the road on Saturday, but we'll be back on Sunday.  Y'all play nice.

Inundation

 It's been raining for what seems to be a week.  We are inundated.  Luckily, I live on the side of a big ridge, so it runs off fairly quickly.  The ditches are full, but that won't last forever.

We have trash bins in this neighborhood.  Lots of places use them, and I'm sure that they are fairly standard across the US.

That's mine, close, with the neighbors across the street.  Fairly standard.  The garbage men pick up our trash on Mondays at daylight.  And, invariably, the leave the lid open.  No big deal.  his morning I went out to drop a bag of trash, and found over a foot of rainwater in the bottom of the bin.  So, I can say with some certainty that we've gotten a foot of rain the past 48 hours.

RAIN

Dallas/Ft. Worth is catching hell.  It's raining here too, but our acre sits atop a big ridge line.

Summer Time

 Things are getting warm outside. Checking the weather forecast for today, we see sunny and hot.

That's not something you see every day.  Checking the humidity, we learn that it is a soggy 82% out there, although Belle commented that it doesn't seem as humid as it did yesterday.  Tomorrow's forecast is no better.

There is some work I want to do in the yard, and I intend to get after it, and be done by 10:00.  Only mad dogs and Englishmen go out in the noon day sun.

Oh, and I don't want to hear any of that Glowball Warmeing bullshit.  It gets hot in Louisiana during the summer.

Tuesday Weather

 It's raining sideways outside, and we ar currently under a tornado warning.  It's nothing we haven't seen before.

The radar map has all kinds of pretty colors on it, and we're keeping an eye on it.  

John Kerry, Idiot

 Climate czar John Kerry is concerned that the Ukraine crisis might divert attention from climate change.

I shit you not.

Former Secretary of State John Kerry appeared for an interview to express his regret that the war between Ukraine and Russia is distracting people from climate change.

Damn, John.  It's bad enough that you are irrelevant,  without displaying your stupidity.

I wonder what Russia's carbon footprint in Ukraine looks like today?

The last thing I'm worried about today is climate change, which I believe to be a total farce.  It's apparent that John Kerry is not a serious person, and should never be trusted with serious tasks.  He is totally unsuited to the job. 

Pretty Colors

 Here it comes, the first true winter storm of the season.  

Snow and ice on the radar as far south as San Antonio, but interestingly, there is no snow or ice on the daily forecasts for this area.

Chill Coming

 The weather weenies tell us that there is a winter str coming to the bayou country.  Coing through tonight, about midnight.

This just might get interesting.

Blue Norther

 It has been unseasonably warm around here for the past week or so.  According to the weather weenies, that is about to change.

That is a 50F drop in less than 48 hours.  From a high on Saturday of 80 to a low of 29 on Sunday.

It's not as bad as what happened in Montana in 1972, but it is still a fairly dramatic change.  Sunday may be a good time for a big pot of chili.  I have plenty of butane for the shop heater, so we'll be fine.

Tornados

UPDATE AT 5:10 pm.  See Below 

A tornado is a random, violent event that happens to good people.  We have all heard about the tornado that hit Kentucky this weekend, and our hearts go out to those people.  This may be the most damaging tornado to hit the United States  It was certainly the worst tornado to hit those people.  They will be affected by it for years to come.

But, those of us who have lived longer than a decade can remember other bad tornados.  Just off the top of my head, the one that hit Brandenburg, KY in 1974.

Or, the one that hit Tuscaloosa, AL during 2011.  Belle has family in Tuscaloosa and Birmingham, and it affected those folks in a huge way.

We are already hearing how Climate Change played a huge part, and I dismiss that analysis as flawed. A tornado is a random event, totally unresponsive to human interference.  In our grief over such events, we tend to want to blame something, or someone for the misfortune that befalls us, but in most cases the human frailty of wanting to blame outside forces is simply a coping mechanism.

UPDATE** As horrific as this storm was, another site pointed me to the great Tri-State tornado of 1925.  Total of 695 deaths across three states. The path was 219 miles and it traveled at 62 miles per hour.  It was on the ground for over three hours.

Weather

 It's an odd radar map, three distinct front lines.  I awoke this morning to the rumble of thunder off to the north, and it's still rumbling off to the north.

It looks like today is going to be a day to stay under cover.

Leonard Nimoy Predicts An Ice Age Back In 1979. Fascinating!

People wonder why I am a climate skeptic.  

Below, a clip from a documentary produced in 1979 when they were predicting a global ice age.  The threat of exreme glaciation was going to grind us all into sausage and our cities into dust beneath mountains of ice.

They've been so wrong for so long that it is hard to take them seriously.

Now, It's Nicholas

 It appears that a tropical system in the Gulf we have been watching has now become Tropical Storm Nicholas, the fourteenth named storm this year.  It may or may not become a hurricane, but all indications are that it is going to be a rain-maker.  Some models show as much as 25 inches in some unlucky localities..

It looks like it is mainly going to affect south Texas, but it is supposed to slide into Louisiana as a depression later this week.  We're mainly on the "wet" side of the storm, so we are going to get rain for a couple of days before it dissipates.

Tropics Watch

 It's that time of year, and there is this weather event, some call it Disturbance 1, other call it Invest 99L that is forming over Honduras.  It's early yet, but some of the spaghetti charts have it coming to Louisiana.

We will keep an eye on this one.

Saturday Update

 Great club shoot this morning.  We were just practicing, but we had three (3) new shooters, so we spent a lot of time with safety, and teaching them how to shoot a single action revolver.

After the shoot, I took Belle to lunch, and we had a nice lunch at a little Cajun cafe near the house.  Quite pleasant.

Checking on the Covid numbers at the local hospital, we find:

That is better than yesterday.  It ain't good yet, but it is better.

Looking at the tropics, we see that Fred had downgraded and shifted significantly to the west.  

And, now I see something called Grace, tracking in about the same path as Fred.  The tropics are heating up.

This may be a long hurricane season.

Watching the Tropics

 It appears that Elsa has made her way into the Carolinas, where she will continue to be a nuisance for a couple of more days.  Nothing much going on in Hurricane Alley frright now, and we'll take that as a good men.

Yesterday, second son came over, and we completed the installation of a generator in the shop.  My shop is a refuge inn more ways than one. It's a place where Belle and I entertain, and it is set up fr hospitality.  It's more of a party house than a traditional work shop, and we use it a lot.  The best part is that I can power the whole thing (except the electric range) with a 5kw generator.

Now, with the generator wired, is is simply a matter of flipping the main breaker off, flipping the generator breaker on, and plugging the generator into a four-wire outlet on the outside of the shop.  I can run lights, and AC, and the fridges.  The generator won't pull the electric range, but I have propane options for cooking.

Because we are ready, we might not need it, and that would suit me just fine..
