The Benefits of Bacon

Bacon, far from being just a tasty snack, is a part of American culture that is impossible not to recognize.  On a biscuit for breakfast, on a burger for lunch, or seasoning the veggies at the dinner table, bacon is essential to most American cuisine.  Some eschew it for religious principles and some won't eat it for health reasons, but I never met anyone who said that they didn't like bacon.

Did you know that Americans spend $5 billion on bacon annually?  And, adjusted for inflation, bacon is very economical, on average much less expensive than it was 100 years ago.  Or that Americans eat, on average, 18 pounds of bacon annually?

It's almost universally available. You can find it at a high-end grocer or at the local Dollar Store.  It comes in a variety of styles; thick cut or thin, sugar cured, or smoked, or maple or mesquite.

It's unique in American culture.  Every-man's food, cheap, easy, quick to prepare,

Who can forget Ron Swanson ordering "all the bacon and eggs you have."

This Sunday morning, let's all celebrate bacon.

Son calls bacon the perfect food. I would have to agree.

I often wonder at the push to replace meat with fake lab grown products . Burger Kings Impossible Whopper and now a fake chicken sandwich among others .The Japanese I read have cloned meat into fruit they can grow on trees . Bugs minced up into a hamburger like substance are being developed . I'm set in my ways and have no desire to even try these substitutes . Matter of fact Kate is making one of my favorites this morning . Bacon gravy ! We have an Amish neighbor that still smokes hams and bacon sides the old fashioned way . I save all my dead wild apple trees for him and trade it for hams and bacon .
