Getting Ready

It's past Labor Day now, and it's time to start getting ready for the hunting season.  Ill be hunting on family land this year and I've got some catching up to do.  I need to bush-hog and set up my box stand, and Dad's tractor hasn't had a good battery for several years.  We've been jumping it off, and that's not the answer.  So today after work I went out to the family land and got the battery out of that old tractor.  I'll swap it for a new one tomorrow during my lunch break, and on Saturday I'll go out, fire up the tractor and do some mowing.

Hopefully, by October 1st I'll have my box stand set up and the feeder working.  That'll give the deer six weeks to get used to the mowed grass, the box stand and find the corn on the ground.  Our land is in Area 1, so my season doesn't start till November 15th this year.

I might ought'a get a hunting license too.  That might be a good idea.

Does the State of Louisiana issue a "Pioneer" license like other states do? In OR, if you are 65 and have lived n the state all your life except for military duty, you get a permanent, free, hunting and fishing license. I had to wait for my 70th birthday, because I move here in 1963, and the 50-year rule applied to me. Even with my Pioneer license, I still have to pay for all the tags that go with the licence, though...

Yes, Rivrdog, Louisiana has a Senior Hunting/Fishing license. It's a combo license that lets me hunt, fish, deer hunt, all the basic tags for the princely sum of $5.00 for those folks over age 60. This is my first year to qualify, and I'm stoked about it.

In Alabama, you can get a lifetime hunting and fishing license for a pretty moderate fee. I got mine for less than 500 bucks, and its good until I shuffle off this mortal coil. In addition, it gets me free admission to any of the state-run shooting ranges, free admission to several pay-as-you-go camping and hiking areas, and a serious "Thank You, Sir" when I apply for a (free) Wilderness Area hunting permit.
