I took my EDC out today, took all the ammo out of the mag, and decided to give it a good cleaning and lube. I carry a SW Shield in 9mm, but haven't shot it in a year or so. Carry lots, shoot seldom.
I was amazed at how bone-dry it was, and how much dust and grit was in the innards. A half-hour with rags and oil and I feel a lot better about it. It's ready now for another period of carrying. I really need to get out to the range and do a little. But life and winter got in the way. I also have a .22 carbine I need to shoot. We'll make plans for both of those to go to the range, one day next week.

I got into the habit of cleaning mine EDC weapon every week. I also change magazines too at that time. I like to have at least 6-8 for each weapon. ammo I check, wipe down and maybe then use at the range after a few months just to keep it "fresh" like.
9mm hydra shocks 124 grain is what I like best. gets a bit pricey sometimes, but how much is your life worth ?

A timely reminder, thank you. My EDC as well as the two bedrail mounted pistols are almost certainly in the same condition as what you discovered. The two on the bedrails have a Naugahyde flap of material laid across them as a dustcover, but plain ol' air certainly does its thing.
I clean mine once a month after a range trip.
Several years ago I cleaned mine and found wood chips in the barrel... I had carried it while using the chainsaw a month before.
Since then I'm more careful about checking it after doing messy work.
