I'm hearing rumblings that President Trump is going to let DoD partner with CBP and the FBI and other agencies to target the Mexican cartels.
Tis is not unprecedented. I the 1870s, US Troops were in northern Mexico looking for Germinoma. In 1916-17, US troops were in northern Mexico looking for Pancho Villa.
Is it a good idea for the US to become embroiled on foreign soil looking for the cartels? I'm not sure. They are a pain in the ass, trafficking both humans and drugs across the border, killing thousands of Americans. As much as I like to wave the flag and turn our enemies into pink mist, I have to admit that this may not be a good idea. The cartels are well armed, technologically competent, and they know the ground.
I'm no expert on the cartels in Mexico and the challenges that we might face when we cross the river, but I hope that the decision-makers are listening to experts in that region. With the 1st Armor at Bliss and the 1st Cav at Hood, we have plenty of forces on the ground to take and hold terrain, but I'm not really sure that this is a job for Big Army.

the hardest part is always getting the intel on where to strike.
that can be done with drones and "other" ways of getting needed
intel. once you have the intel-targets, how to strike legally or do you just remove them? the problem is there is a insane amount of money to be made selling drugs and moving people.
you always find someone willing to risk it to make that kind of money, we need to kill the demand or market for drugs in order to make this work long term. I don't see the going to happen anytime soon though.
Cliche. When your only tool is a hammer, everything is a nail. Big Army is a big hammer.
First: "Germinoma"? I assume you meant Geronimo and you sneezed while typing it or something.
Second, from what I've seen I don't think Trump envisions using them in Mexico proper, but in the US.
The idea is that since declaring the Cartels to be enemy terrorists...and many of them are not American citizens, dealing with them is not a police function but a military action; therefore no problem with Posse Comitatus.
I could be reading things wrong and if they get a cartel group on the run, it wouldn't shock me if they chased them all the way into Mexico, but I don't think that's the intent.
If I was determined to hurt the cartels I think I'd try to interrupt their supply chains. If they lose money they lose men. Then go after them.
First we have to take care of the problem The Government created here on our home turf. The problem will resolve itself if there is no money.
