.257 Roberts was probably the top choice for rechambering the 6.5mm Arisaka and 6.5mm Carcano. 6.5mm is just the TINIEST bit larger than .257 inches.
At this point, the thing that holds the .257 Bob back is that the bullet selection for 6.5mm rounds is MUCH better than .257 and modern powders can squeeze as much performance out of a case that holds 40 grains that required 50 grains in 1950.
One place where .257 Bob can shine is in places where it gets incredibly hot, places like Africa and Arizona. Pressures spike and the pedestrian pressures of the .257 Bob are still safe even when a pedal-to-the-metal, heavy bullet 6.5mm Magnums will turn brass into grenades or swell the brass so a quick, second shot is impossible.
