Thanks, AP Style Guide

 It seems that last week, there was a riot.  Other sources  called it an insurrection.  A threat to democracy.

Some of us wondered if, after the riots last summer, when cities burned, if the AP had suddenly found a riot that they liked.  Tongue-in-cheek, we wondered why when cities were buring acorss the country, literally on fire, they were called protests, and when other folks broke intothe Capitol and stole the Speaker's podium, that was a riot.

Well, they cleared it up for us.

Uh oh. Here we go. Reporters apparently need to be careful when using the word riot if there’s any chance that non-White people might be involved.

So, let me get this straight.  IF a bunch of rowdy white folks get together and steal the Speaker's podium, that's a riot.  Or an insurrection, but if a bunch of non-white people get together and burn down a police station, that's a "mostly-peaceful" protest:.

Got it.  Only white folks can riot under the AP Style book.

And they wonder why we laugh at them.  The Emperor has no clothes.
