Joe Biden. Senator from Delaware, will be Obama's running mate.
Regardless of who wins, we will have elected a Senator for President. It's been a while since that happened. Carter wasn't a Senator, Reagan wasn't a Senator. Clinton wasn't a Senator, and neither of the Bushs were Senators. It's been a while since we had a Senator ascend to the Presidency.
The US Senate is a deliberative body, probably the most prestigious deliberative body in the world. Still, participating in a deliberative body is different than running an executive office. Neither of the contenders have much experience running an executive office.
Next week begins the Democratic showcase in Denver. It'll be quite the media event, I'm sure. Not much of substance will be decided (we already know who the nominee and the running mate are), but it'll be a talking-head lalapallooza. I feel like Hillary's PUMA's are going to make some noise, but barring any unfortunate circumstance, we know the outcome of the event. Obama will be nominated, give a speech, and start campaigning his ass off. I'd love to see a brokered convention, with fistfights on the floor, but that ain't likely to happen.
The Republican convention, later in Minnesota, will be just as bad. We already know the result. There's not going to be much in the way of surprises. It's going to be a four-day media event, carefully scripted, carefully covered. They could do it over a weekend, but that would only be a two day event.
Both parties could save a lot of money, and have a mail-in convention. Have the delegates send their ballots via US Mail and count them from a rented office somewhere. That wouldn't be much of a media event, but it would achieve the same result at far less cost.
Or, you could get all the delegates together, all in one room, and do a vote. Quietly. No hoopla. Lend some dignity to an event that has become a media circus. Wouldn't that be instructive. To quietly, with dignity, nominate a candidate for president. The delegates could steal into town. Quietly meet at a small, discreet venue, conduct their business in a single evening, and steal out of town.

I like Buden, but there were so many others to choose from first!
Powell, Clark, Richardson, Sebelius...
WHy Biden!?
I'm not sure about this... it looks like another Kerry/Edwards
Biden said Obama was "articulate". This is a word black people do not like coming from the mouth of a Caucasian person when speaking about them. However, I am African-American and I think it is okay for your vice-presidential pick to call you articulate! Hooray for Biden! Obama could not have made a better choice. Biden will give McCain what for! Obama is not a person who likes to argue. Biden has no problem with it. They were made for each other! On to the White House! But give Richardson something to do in there also, Obama.
Another losing democrat losing ticket. Gore/Lieberman - Kerry/Edwards
The democrat party still belongs to the winner, Bill Clinton.
We will sigh and scratch are heads on Obama/Biden in 4 years.
How do we do this to ourselves every 4 years. Delaware? I love Biden but Delaware?
Obama's choice only shows how afraid he is of the radical left that thinks it owns the party.
Obama, Biden, Pelosi is not the democrat party. Bill Clinton is and will be until somebody can win whoop that repug smear machine.
Obama's mistake was thinking he could be king by only by destroying the only democrat king since JFK and LBJ.
As Obama likes to do, compare himself to RR, no dem should ever say bad on its own. Cardinal Obama and his teenage groupies should have thought about last Spring.
Have fun losing brothers and sisters. Even with 100% of the black in the south; Obama/Biden loses.
sigh - another wanna be flash in the pan. Veterans of these wars knew it; that's why Hillary should have been the nominee.
We could've had Romney as president for the next four years.
McCain will be a far better president than stupid occupying the house now.
Obama/Biden has no chance.
Once again Obama shows that he has the maturity to make the right decision, rather than making a popular choice. He demonstrated prudence and that tells me that he will not do what is expected of him, but what he considers to be the right choice. NOW HE HAS MY VOTE!
To 11:19 AM: Your man McCain should have come home from Vietnam when he had the chance. With the help of his influential father he could have gone back and pulled a "Bruce Willis" type move to free them. 1) He knew where the men were being kept; 2)He knew how many guards there were and exactly what time most of them would be sleeping. He makes really bad decisions.
Obama's choice does not signal a committment to real change. I want an Administration that is going to take a weed-wacker to federal spending, cut the bureaucracy, and get Congress out of paralysis. I DON'T want any more parade elephants. So maybe Biden (1) knows how many homes he owns, and (2) doesn't own a $1.4 million one on a Senator's salary. Even so, I'm writing in Clinton. She's the only politico I can trust to really jolt Washington.
I'm just glad it wasn't Clinton.
We'll see how these two argue their case - it should be fun to watch!
For a second there, it sounded like Obama was introducing Biden as the nex "President."
That's a gaff Mccain will eat up.
Biden is a good, no a very good candidate for President, let alone Vice President.
For once, Obama baby used his head and got someone of substance. He sure does not have any.
The next smart thing he should do is send Michelle into hibernation until after the election. She is a walking time bomb! Nothing good came come from her.
Joe Biden??? What was Obama thinking? What true American wants a smug elitist like Biden in the country's #2 spot?!?! Obama just lost my vote.
S - "Obama just lost my vote."
S for Stupid...
Stupid people, retreat!!
From Gettysburg PA: Obama lost my vote!! In fact, if he would have chosen anyone who was not OLD, WHITE and MALE, I probably would have just left it at that, but because Biden was his pick, I think I'll vote for McCain to double the punch! It is so predicatble and boring that this was his choice! All WOMEN should be insenced that Obama has chosen to go down the same, old road.
Obama Biden laden, lol i bet you hear that again
the pic on cnn looks loke obama has his hand in bidens back like he is a dummy,
was not going to vote for obama anyway, so his coice meant nothing to me
Joe Biden as Obama's running mate weakens the Obama brand. Barack Obama is a brand. His tagline is "Change We Can Believe In." Biden in no way represent change or a new approach to government. Politics in America is fundamentally about marketing and money. And the first rule of marketing is that you stay on message and not compromise the brand. Would you find Jimmy Choo shoes in Walmart? Of course not.
How can Obama realistically present a new way of governing with a senator on his ticket that has 35-year record in Washington. Biden represents the old, white, good ole boy's club and not innovative, thought-provoking, new government. What was Obama's camp thinking? This is scary.
The Colored Oracle
What a poor choice of locations in the U.S. to introduce his V.P.
Springfield IL. is the capitol of corruption, scandals, bribery, and gridlock.
YES ignorant democrats - that's where Obama has gotten his start and all his experience comes from here - and funded in part by Tony Rezko.
Awww...OBAMA cannot handle the heat by himself-so he needed a father figure on his side-how sweet.
Awww...OBAMA cannot handle the heat by himself-so he needed a father figure on his side-how sweet.
I rather have an experienced man like Biden, than a selfish woman like Hillary. I don't like the fact of she and her husband stepping aside, while they could be on TV saying that Obama is ready to be the next president he needs every vote. I can't believe Hillary's followers don't know that the democratic party chose a candidate already, and all democrats need to support him, so we can't stop this republican mess. And incredibly, some of them are upset because she is wasn't picked for VP. Neither Hillary or Bill have done nothing or little to help Senator Obama.
My beloved republican party just lost the election. I will remain president of the Atlanta Log Cabin Republicans but will be voting for the unstoppable Obama-Biden ticket in Nov.
I've watched and listened to Biden on C-SPAN. Obama will be on his string as a puppet. "Pull the String! Pull the String!"
Enough already... Fellow Dems...Please be aware of your actions...I know that you love Hill and that's fine...But to say...McCain over any Dem would be ok...Not good...She didn't win and she can't blame anyone but herself...Not Obama... Who has tried to take the high road. SIDE BAR...Why do we have to down talk someone else to make us look better? Why can't we just talk about what we will do and not what someone else wouldn't... Ok then... My point is this...She didn't win...and if Dems can't get behind Obama he's not going to win... So she will get another chance...Let's say she wins then...A lot of us will remember that YOU didn't support Obama and yet you will be asking us to support her... Some will not but I will support her...Because I know that we need a DEM in the White House... So think about it because the one thing that you are NOT willing to give is the same thing that YOU will be asking for one day... Thank you...
Sgt. Mo Black.... BTW... I'M A MILITARY DEM THAT'S BEEN TO IRAQ 4 TIMES and looking at my 5th... I've lost a few friends and a family member.... I would go back today to serve my country or to help someone else make it back alive.
