Lasers? Okay.

So, YouTube claims that the US Navy is using lasers as weapons in the strait of Hormuz.

Go watch.

I was personally using lasers in the M60A3 in the mid-80s.  We used them for ranging and we thought that the ability to do so was high-tech, whizbang science.   Now, the Navy is shooting down drones with them.

Well, this is the 21st century.

"Shredded"? Um, maybe having some holes poked in it or coming down on fire, but shredded in the air? Color me skeptical.
So, how well do these hypothetical lasers work when the air isn't clear?
In the good ole days, 4 of 5 of our point-defense missiles we tried to launch during a war game failed to reach the poor F-4 drone target. Some of 'em didn't leave the rail. Didn't inspire confidence in the troops...

Lasers yes. Now look into microwave weapons. Can fry circuitry at moderate distances. Drones, missile circuits, speedboat engines. If it’s small enough and light enough to not have an internal faraday cage and doesn’t have thick steel walls, the microwaves will do it in. Doesn’t work on pre 1973 engines or pre 1975 electronics.
