Speaking of the incipient indictment of Donald Trump, I see in comments the following regarding his campaign.
If he is convicted of a crime, any crime, they can use that to prevent him from running.
I'm not sure about that. The qualifications for President are set out in Article 2, Section 1 of our Constitution.
No Person except a natural born Citizen, or a Citizen of the United States, at the time of the Adoption of this Constitution, shall be eligible to the Office of President; neither shall any Person be eligible to that Office who shall not have attained to the Age of thirty five Years, and been fourteen Years a Resident .
Natural born, 35 years. I don't see anything there about conviction. If I am in error, please correct me, but I don't believe that a conviction is an impediment to holding the office.

Sure would be nice if people understood the real meaning of natural born citizen. Both parents citizens when child is born. Obama is only half, kamalatoe is an anchor baby- neither parent citizens then.
Criminals can and do run for Congress.
For a clear example, see Traficant, who represented Youngstown for years, including after serving a federal sentence.
This is specifically in the law so that the party in power can't push false charges against their opponent.
