Free education ain't free. According to information freely available on the internet, any citizen can see what K-12 education costs. For example, my own home parish (county) of Rapides spends $11,486 per student on free education. How did I come to that conclusion?
Total revenue of $264.2 million
divided by
Total student headcount of 23,000
That revenue figure is a total of federal, state, and local funding, but it's taxpayer dollars and it comes our of our collective pockets. I do pay federal, state, and local taxes.
Don't get all riled up, because I'm a big supporter of education. Education is a wonderful thing, and anything that is good, is bound to cost something. But, it ain't free.

check out the graphs for inflation adjusted cost of "education", and the test results. Seldom have so many, paid so much, for so little return.
Unless you count turning the children into little communists, using that metric, schooling has been wildly successful.
