Asked Again

In Comments, oldlurker asks:
Suppose one wanted a shotgun for mostly home defense purposes - what's your recommendation for one that might also suit a spouse or teenage son should that need occur?
That's simple.  Which shotgun is in your closet right now?  That's the one you want.

However, if you're looking for another shotgun, that's easy too.  Remington, Mossberg, Winchester, all make good pump shotguns.  I've got a Remington 870 standard that I've carried for years.  Mine has the 20" rifle sighted barrel.  However, if I were looking for a dual-purpose shotgun today, I'd probably look at the Remington 11-87 Youth Compact in 20 gauge.  That 21 inch barrel makes it very versatile.

Or, I'd go with one of the Mossberg Bantam series.   Either of those would work fine for a multi-purpose home defense/sporting shotgun for a teen son or a spouse.

Concur, and 20 ga is MUCH more manageable for the wife and kids.

I was given an old Rears and Sawbuck break action 12 ga some years back. I had it checked for safety and the chamber measured (2 1/2"). So I took my trusty hacksaw and cut tyhe barrel to 18 1/2" then deburred it with my pocket knife. That's my house shotgun. No cost except for the ten bucks the 'smith charged and ten minutes work. I keep it loaded with a #4 buck shell and another four in a stock sock. I have hunted with single shots all my adult life and can reload in less than two seconds. Have you ever heard a 12 ga. 2 1/2" load fired inside? Loud doesn't even come close.

I have quite a few shotguns, including a Mossberg 500, but I have to say of all for home defense, I have two H&R (NEF) Pardners - paid $180 on sale for each of them. Loaded with low recoil buckshot - my wife and daughter both handle it easily.

I've sent many rounds through both and they have held up exceedingly well.

Thanks Pawpaw, et al - that gets me right where I wanted to head. 20 gauge it is.

Your choice of the little Remington pump is what I recommend. However, such words are usually met with complete disbelief because everyone knows the 20 ga. won't kill anyone unless it is left loaded in a pickup truck. I am 5' 8" and the youth/compact stock fits me well enough, double good if I had my winter-wear on to go hunting. I've already put a youth/compact stock on the Winchester 120.
