Obligatory - Obama pisses off the Church

I don't know if any of you noticed, but the Lightworker pissed off the Church last week, telling them that they would have to offer contraception as part of their medical insurance packages to employees. The Bishops are understandably outraged for a variety of reasons, not the least of which is the moral conscience of the Church, which says that contraception is a sin.
The mandate forces these organizations to facilitate the use of products and services that violate their religious doctrine, under penalty of government force. It’s exactly the type of government threat from which the First Amendment was written to protect religious practice — and that included the practice of religion outside of worship spaces.
This policy is bad optics on the part of our President. It's costly, it's over-reaching, it's unconstitutional. The only part of this that makes sense is that he's pandering to his base who wants contraception available to everyone at no cost. However, it fails to take into account that for any product there is a cost and those costs are not always measured in dollars. In the case of the Catholic Church, that cost is often measured in souls.

This is an unforced error by Obama, one that highlights the over-reach of an intrusive government. More than anything else it is policy like this that will force the American voter to conclude that electing Obama was bad policy.
