Eliminate ATF?

That's what's being reported at Townhall.com.
Multiple sources, including sources from ATF, DOJ and Congressional offices have said there is a white paper circulating within the Department of Justice, outlining the essential elimination of ATF. According to sources, the paper outlines the firing of at least 450 ATF agents in an effort to conduct damage control as Operation Fast and Furious gets uglier and as election day 2012 gets closer. ATF agents wouldn’t be reassigned to other positions, just simply let go. Current duties of ATF, including the enforcement of explosives and gun laws, would be transferred to other agencies, possibly the FBI and the DEA. According to a congressional source, there have been rumblings about the elimination of ATF for quite sometime, but the move would require major political capital to actually happen.
That's a Friday afternoon news drop for you.

I'm in favor. You start firing those guys and they'll start singing like canaries. Not that they don't deserve firing, they violated their oath, each and every one associated with the program. I'd love to know who ordered the program, who approved it, and when they knew about it. All in violation of the US Code they're sworn to uphold. The "Just Following Orders" defense died at Nuremberg.

Hat tip, SayUncle.

Agreed, and yes that 'would' open up the flood gates, and I'll bet THEN we'd find out the truth!

No, Old NFO, they WOULD start singing like canaries, and that's precisely the reason they will be retained on staff somewhere in the Federal system.

The worst threat to Obama is the singing canaries, not the ATF as a whole, so he will put up with the liability of the ATF, and we will see MORE cover-up and obfuscation.

Bureaucracy 101, NFO.
