Good news, on the optics of the President's vacation. It seems that our President has taken fewer vacation days in this term than than both Reagen and Bush took during their first term. According to CBS News:
However, both Reagan and Bush had ranches where they vacationed, and if you've ever heard of a little plant called mesquite, or Texas cedar, you know that you've got to hammer it constantly or it will take over the whole place. Clearing brush is damned hard work, but it's satisfying as you immediately see the results of your labor. It's man's work and in some places you're judged by your peers as to how little brush is on your place.
I don't see President Obama cutting cedar, or burning piles of mesquite. The man's never done a days work in his life. No, he'd rather hobnob with the rich and famous at Martha's vineyard. That's the problem with his vacations. They seem like vacations. Both Presidents Bush and Obama like to ride bicycles and that's good exercise, and I know that neither man completely escapes the daily duties of the office. There are briefings that are imported and he's constantly in touch with what he needs to be in touch with. Still, cutting brush on a Texas ranch is one thing. Rubbing elbows with the elite on Martha's Vineyard is something else entirely.
